The dump cars are made by Bachmann and listed as 1:20.3. Bachmann sells them in black or oxide red. (I have the oxide red version).

I distressed the “wood” planks with dental tools, a razor saw, and Dremel tool.I painted the frames engine black. The upper part of the cars were airbrushed with Vallejo gray primer.

The “metal” parts were then hand-painted using Micromark’s Engine Black. The planks were washed with a black wash of water and acrylic paint. The planks were then “painted” with Lifecolor Hemp, Rope and Tarps paints diluted with water. Next, I washed the planks with a wash of raw umber and odorless spirits to bring out the recesses in the grain.

The metal parts were weathered with Monroe Models Dark Rust in random areas. I used Monroe Models Quick Age as a control coat and to fade the engine black paint.

The wheels were painted using grimy black and dark rust with Monroe Models Dark Rust wash.

Everything was dry brushed with Vallejo Deck Tan to bring out the details. Finally the interior was detailed with stone dust and Pan Pastels along with the tops of the frames and other horizontal surfaces.

The Bachmann couplers were removed and the nubs for the couplers were cut off using my band saw. Ozark Miniatures Link and Pin couplers were added.
